Hi,
Using suse6 and the 2.2.1 kernel.
I've been playing around with printing when
I get a chance. I've ran into some "oddities",
and wonder if anyone knows what the deal is?
1. I was recently given a bunch of suggestions on how
to print plain text files from a command line.
I finally had to resort to what was in the manual...doh...!!
To print a plain ascii text file from the command line,
I just enter "lpr -Praw textfile"...very easy.
There is one glitch to this. As root it works perfectly.
As a user, it works from a command line or xterm perfectly,
but when I enter it on the Midnight Commander command line,
it prints, but the console locks up.
When I do a ps -aux I see that a "cons.saver" for that tty
is locking the tty. It seems like Midnight Commander is not
regaining the tty after printing. It works perfectly
when running Midnight Commander in an xterm.
Any clues, or should I just learn to live with it?
2. I need to do a chmod 666 on /dev/lp0 to get normal
users rights to the printer. Is this normal? Is there
another way to give users printing rights? Do I need to
set up a printer group?
