I had almost the same problem. In my case I purchased SuSE Linux 5.3 directly from
SuSE. It did come with a registration card and registration number printed in the
manual. However, their label printer was misaligned so neither number was
legible. When I tried to do something about it Iwas continually bounced back and
forth between sales and tech support (the latter, of course, almost always
unreachable by phone). After a couple of weeks I finally convinced someone in tech
support to issue me a new number altogether, although the person who did it did it
very reluctantly and said that this was a very special exception.
