I am betting that the image is too large to boot. You have two options
in this case. Run the make config again and use modules wherever
possible to reduce the size of the kernel. (This is the cure I would
prefer) You may also substitute "make bzImage" for the "make zImage"
command.
Modules may be used for any drivers not needed to boot the system.
Network card, ppp, those kinds of things. If you do this be sure to
select loadable module support in your make config.
