The 'shutdown -h now' command tells Linux to halt the system
immediately, as opposed to '-r" which tells it to reboot. These two
options are the only good ways to shutdown or reboot your system.
If you have disk errors each time you boot up, even after a correct
shutdown, then perhaps your hard disk is telling you it is about to go
south.
