It needed the script, but if anyone cares, I now have found the problem.
SuSE by default created a /etc/ppp/options file. This file is required by
kppp to be in existence, but empty. deleting the contents of this file fixed
the problem.
Now if I can only get StarOffice to register properly I would be able to
delete MS from my life ... 8-)
