Have you managed to get enlightenment and gnome working ever? The
reason I ask is that I had difficulties the first few times getting
things going. When I first tried using the window manager capplet in
gnome it wouldnot fully initialize enlightenment at all. I was left
like you with no window manager. Try this. Comment on the statement
which says exec gnome-session in your .xinitrc and put in as the last
line exec enlightenment. Now start enlightenment. The gnome-session
thing shouldnot start now. Now start the panel by typing in an xterm
panel &. This should start the gnome panel. Now look at the window
manager capplet on the panel and see whats selected. If it says
something other than enlightenment, select enlightenment. It may dive
bomb you to the console or switch you. You may have to do this a few
times. The main thing you will want to do is be able to shutdown
cleanly. Now you can re-edit .xinitrc and put back in exec
gnome-session.

These are the steps I have had to do or pretty close.
