Is it along the lines of ...
"Dear Mr. Joe Q Public
A recent scan for the Melissa macro virus on your computer revealed
that you were not infected. However, we noticed that you have a copy of
Word that is not registered.... accusations of pirating... law suit
threats...blah blah blah... threats of imprisonment... blah blah blah
...requests for triple damages... blah blah blah....
Sincerely,
Imma Lizard, Esq.
Legal Counsel for Microsoft"
is this what you mean?
Last fall I read of an account of a man who was sued by Microsoft after
he called their help line. Microsoft claimed that the software he was
using was registered to someone else. He faxed photocopies of his bill
of sale and other proofs of ownership but M$'s legal eagel refused to
listen. It finally was discovered that M$ had used the same reg. number
for several thousand copies of the product which, if I remember right,
was Excel.
I get the distinct impression that M$ is coming apart at the seams the
same way the USSR did, for exactly the same reasons. The company is too
big for a single dictator to run everthing and stay on top of things.
