Sound like your serial port is not being initialized properly.  What I did
was edit /sbin/init.d/serial and add a line like this:

 ${SETSERIAL} /dev/cua2 uart 16550A port 0x3E8 irq 4 spd_vhi

There may be a way to do that with yast, but I did it "the hard way."
Man setserial for details.  You might also check the init string for your
modem.  The modem manual should give the relevant settings.

You have to tell your computer how to find your ISP's nameservers.  The
file /etc/resolv.conf should have one or more lines like

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

where xxx... is the IP address of the nameserver.  There is a menu item in
yast to enter those addresses.  Under system administration, I think.
