Robert,
When you consider that there are now millions upon millions of Linux
users, the few anti-social types that you encounter on newsgroups and
maillists are not even a drop in the bucket. Most people just use Linux
(and WinXX) without much thought about opinions expressed here and other
places.
The reputation will be based on the reliability of the kernel and the
major apps, like GIMP, KDE, WP8, SO 5.0 and others. Not on any
particular person. Linux is too big for that now.
