>Perl hmmm.
Perl is a sysadmin created improvement on various UNIX utilites such as
awk and sh. Your perception that it is only for reports is common since
only 3 years ago, that is what it was. It does provide interfaces to
just about every dataserver out there, MySQl being the favorite. It
uses a concept called "tie" to tie variables to elements inside the
dataserver, when an variable gets changed the dataserver is triggered to
mirror the perl change, hence its nickname - the glue language. For
this reason, it is the most common back end language on the web,
virtually all CGI is written in it.
Perl is full functioning in every way, but my OO dataserver is possibly
the only perl only solution out there, I think it is a significant step,
but I am not getting the support I need to complete the project. Why,
thats a long story.
It is generally considered a good second best to C language, C is very
likely where I will be going in parallel to Java though I may have to
give up some other projects to make room, such as my paycheck :(
Java is a well thought out approach and while it may have its faults it
is the only long term escape from MicroSleaze, at least right now.
The Java database I mentioned looks promising, as I said, OO databases
can be very efficent.
Have a nice vacation, John van V.
