| Thank you very much Terrance for that bzImage tip. That did it for me.

Congratulations upon your fist successful compile of the kernel!

| 1. I still can't get ANY incarnation of ICQ to work.

You may want to go the mirablis site (http://www.mirablis.com) and get the
java version of ICQ, called JavaICQ (imagine that! :?) )... It runs like a
pig, but it does support all the things that the users of other OS have come
to expect from ICQ

| 2. I need to set up this machine as a Firewall/Masq box. Because when I had
 Win95 I
| was running SyGate.

This is not a daunting task, but I would suggest that you read the
Masquerading HOWTO first, which may guide you nicely through setting it up.
Also for people who are interested in this, there is a nice book out there
called "The Linux Network Tookit" which covers masquerading and firewall setups

| 3. I need to get my printer working under Linux. I have figured out one
| problem......my printer is a WINGUI based printer, and hence is not supported
 under
| Linux. It's odd, because it's quite a high end printer. It's an Epson Styl
us Pro.

This is interesting only because, I am using the Epson Sylus Color 800 as my
printer. If you do a gs -?, you will get a list of all the printers that
GhostScript supports. One of those will be something called stcolor which is
the driver for the Epson Color Stylus. Use that and you should be good to go?

| I currently have a P-233 MMX with 64 MB of RAM.
|
| 1. Can I run a firewall/masq/SAMBA (file and printer sharing) on this box
| without all those services being a strain on the system's performance?
|
| Note that Printing and file sharing will be done VERY sparsely, it is mainly
| going to be a masq server with firewalling there to protect my poor little
| home network :-)

I have run the above services on a '486/50MHz with no problems... Although
good practice would dictate that you not have your file server on the same
machine that you are running your firewall on, but that is just a security
issue.

In comment your your statement above about protecting "my poor little home
network". Any network worth building is worth protecting! :?)

| 2. Can I run a FTP daemon, and have people upload and download win95 files
| without them being corrupted when they reside on the ext2 fs? ( I have
asked | this question before but I erased the reply by mistake, sorry)

There will be no problems with files being placed on your ftp server from another
platform. There will be some chokage by WU-FTPD because of how Win/{95,98} handles the
long file names. When I was doing ftp services, I created a small files FAT32
filesystem under my /pub which allowed for the long filenames and didn't munge them.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!
