very odd. This is my global section, not much difference.

[global]
   workgroup = Linux
   comment = Samba-1.9.18p8
   guest account = pcguest
   share modes = yes
   auto services= homes printers
   interfaces=192.168.42.243/255.255.255.0
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
but you made sure your put in your ethernet address and netmask?
(I know, very stupid to ask)

   browseable=yes
   fake oplocks=yes
   getwd cache=yes
   encrypt passwords = yes
#   socket options=TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192
   read size = 65535
   read prediction =True
   read raw=yes
   write raw=yes
   shared mem size = 10000000
   max xmit=65535
   wins support=no
   keep alive = 30
   os level = 2
   security = user
   printing = bsd
   printcap name = /etc/printcap
   load printers = yes

bind failed on port 137 socket_addr=192.168.0.2 (Cannot assign requested
address)

make_subnet: Failed to open nmb socket on interface 196.168.0.2 for port
137. Error was Cannot assign requested address
ERROR: Failed when creating subnet lists. Exiting."

what is this ethernet address 196.168.0.2? It's different from
192.168.1.2
you use for your interface. A typo?

my logfile reads:
brauki@marvin:/var/log > cat nmbd*
1999/01/03 18:08:23 netbios nameserver version 1.9.18p10 started
Copyright Andrew Tridgell 1994-1997

1999/01/03 18:14:09 ***** Samba name server MARVIN is now a local
master browser for workgroup LINUX on subnet 192.168.42.243 *****

That's all I an afraid. No real clue. If you're desperate enough, try my
global section, but enter the proper eth0 address/netmask.
