Hi Hal-
I use kppp often when I first install linux so I can jump on the net and
get xisp or wvdial downloaded and built. I am using a Diamond Supra 56i
internal modem flashed to v90. Here is what I have seen. If I set the
connection to 57.6, I often only get 9600. I open the log window and
observe the connect speed. Sometimes I have my ISP tech support telnet to
the ascend routers and get my connect speed. If I set kppp to 115.2 or
whatever, I connect quite a bit faster and if I find a dialing string that
works I get even better. For me, the ole standby AT&F1M0 to quiet my
noisy supra works quite well. I have the best luck with xisp since it
seems more robust than kppp to me. The easiest setup for me was with
wvdial. Have you tried dialing strings? I know that kppp defaults to
ATZ. I would try setting the port speed to 115.2 and see if that helps.
As far as the ppp dying, this happens enough with kppp to get me to xisp
on a regular basis. The most solid connects I get are with xisp that I
rolled myself.
