Hmmm.. my experience is not the same at all:

hardware:

AMD K6-2 3D 350Mhz w/192megs RAM
12gigs spread across 3 SCSI Seagates
AHA2940UW & all SCSI devices
etc.

distro:

SuSE 5.3 (and WinBlows unfortunately)

No downtime at all except to reboot for a kernel change.
