I'd suggest using Midnight Commander's edit feature.
>From the command prompt, type "mc", select your file, and hit F4 .
This also run from with xwindows.
No learning curve at all!

To be honest, I use JOE, and PICO sometimes, but I want something better.

please don't reccomend something that has a HUGE learning curve......
