Thanks to all who responded.

(For my next question, see at end).

Jesse McDonnell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> suggested trying
the alsa drivers at http://alsa.jcu.cz. I haven't tried these, but
may yet, if feeling experimental.

Install the OSS under "sound" thats on the CD (of the real distro if you
have that) There are two different OSS there the first will do, the second
is for newer cards and is not as free to use.

Therefore please follow the instructions given in the articles
"ISA-PnP: Configuring an ISA-PnP card" and "Sound: Configuring an
ISA-PnP Soundcard" of our support database
http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb_e

I read these and the first sounded a bit too much like the
trial-and-error I'd been going through, so I thought I'd give OSS a try.
The OSS on the SuSE-5.1 CD compained about not been able to match the
kernel version (2.0.33) and refused to install, so I followed up the
Readme and pulled the later OSS version for kernels 2.0.00-2.0.33 from
http://www.opensound.com/oss.html -> download.

This installed flawlessly and painlessly, and has been equally painless
since. You have to rename your existing sound.o module to get it out of
the way, and you also need to keep /etc/isapnp.conf out of the way
similarly. OSS autoidentified the card on istallation. All you need
to do is "soundon" to load the modules and "soundoff" to unload them.
As Ola Andersson said, "Tada. works perfect."

You're limited to 20 minutes at a time for the evaluation version if you
don't buy a licence, but for the time being I can live with that.

So that's it. Success, and thanks to all who replied so helpfully.

Now for my next question: Does anyone know whether (and, if so, how)
it is possible to play an audio CD which is in a CDROM drive on
a different machine in the network? (All that's really needed is some
utility which can pull the audio data across the network and submit it to
the local sound player).

Best wishes to all,
Ted.
