Just off the top of my head, you might get this effect if
your inside 
machines have entries in /etc/hosts like:

192.168.45.23   greedo.jrc-utah.com    greedo ftphost

Then you can reach that machine as 
ftp greedo
ftp ftphost
OR
ftp 192.168.45.23
