In detail:

In the directory with the pictures,

xv

right click on banner, get xv control center

on control center, hold down left button on "Windows" and select
"Visual Schnauzer"; up it comes. At this stage you only have boxes with
formats.

On visual schnuzer, hold down left button on "Misc Commands" and select
"update icons". After a bit you get your thumbnails; these will show up
whenever you subsequently open the Vis Schn.

(The thumbnails are stored as tiny images in the subdirectory ".xvpics"
of the directory holding the pictures).
