hi !

don't know wether i got your problem right;
i've got a us-keyboard, and all settings on my box are
the default/us- ones.

sometimes i want to use european special-characters,
i can achieve that with the right control-key; this one
emulates the sun(?) compose-key.

** works only with X for me !! ****

in /etc/Xf86config:

Section "Keyboard"

    Protocol "Standard"
    AutoRepeat 500 5
    LeftAlt Meta
    RightAlt ModeShift
    RightCtl Compose
# ScrollLock ModeLock
    XkbDisable
# XkbLayout "de"
    XkbKeymap "xfree86(us)"

EndSection

now i press...
1: [compose]
2: release [compose]
3: ":" [Shift+']
4: aou

and get.. (hope it arrives healthy ;-) )

with a:
with o:
with u:

with e: ( for that funny french cars.. )

the german sharp s ''
can be obtained with compose, ss

hope it helps !

Gruss / with best regards
