Francis,
There could be a couple of reason. Is your video card
configured correctly?
You may try to reducing the usage of Max graphic
setting to minimum on all programs. On personal
experience I can tell you SusE 7.1 runs better on my
Sparc5 than 7.3
Did you assign sufficient swap space?
Did you check to see what process are running?
Also try run the top command & analyze the data.
