Yes,
Unless beta-test-runs become available (would love that) waiting is the only
thing we can do.
Last rumours I heard, was that sparc-32 is still problematic (in contrast to
ultra-sparc)
Don't know about the latest compiler, but I guess (!!!) the considerations
for 64-bit userland are for sparc not different
then for the linux port on PA-RISC (HP). On their latest version, the system
can fully handle 64-bit (lots of systems with >> 4GB available.
But it was considered a complete waste of time for creating 64-bit userland
applications, yet.
Furthermore, I would not count on an OO port for linux/sparc. I'm subscribed
to the porting list of OpenOffice and that would be the first place to
detect any attempts. Porting a project such enormous big is not a single
person job. I tried go get some people to post OO to PA-RISC (either HP-UX
or linux), but all I could get was seven people, with only three having the
opportunity to compile something: My, Myself and I......
At home, I only have small machines (LX, SS4, and SS20), so not really
machines to start huge compilations on.
And at work (well as long as the company is not going bust) I would become
quite impopulair if I would "allocate" some of the U80 or E450 to run linux,
shame though...

Thanks all, I'll await the 8.x release. Maybe it will have gcc 3.1?
I
utilize this on solaris and it works very well compiling 64 capable
code.... maybe 64 bit userland is next for linux/sparc?

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest
