Sounds like your firewall is set active.

OR

inetd / xinetd not configured properly.

Can you telnet, ftp, etc OUT of the machine to others? That's the first
test, if it does, then we're in good shape.

What happens when you try to telnet into the machine? Does it 'hang' for a
while or does it refuse connection immediately?

If you can ping it no problem, then the driver itself is working. Connecting
to system via IP is dependent on other applications binding to ports and
listening/responding. And the firewall tries to sandwich it's way in there
first.  I had similar problem on x86 box w/ default installation (firewall
set active).

You can disable SuSE firewall by editing /etc/rc.config file. When you boot,
the 'firewall' status message should say "disabled".
