This I don't mind as it's forced me to try/learn lots of new things. I like
the package management, but it does sometimes make me feel like a "Mac
user" (though at the time I liked that, too). I think that without the
necessity I'd have never bothered compiling something. I'm not yet ready to
compile my own kernel, but who knows, maybe someday (when I have _lots_ of
time)...
Having compiled Apache with PHP, I feel like I've fathered a child (if you
will) - not as great a high as having written the code, but nonetheless.
I did want to mention that I found other image gallery server software
("Gallery" it's called) that is php-based, and it is racing along on ol'
timo (the sparc which converted to linuxism). Images load just as fast as
can be now. It may not ever be needed by Yahoo, but for our purpose, the
future for this 'white elephant' is looking much better. :-)
