1. What I am trying to do: We have a bunch of ultra 1 and ultra 30 systems lying around and I thought it would be fun to get Linux on them. These systems have hard drives and network cards but no floppy or cdrom drives. I built a Suse 7.3 (sparc) system on an Ultra 5 and am trying to get one of the old systems to boot from network with the intent of installing Suse on its local hard drive.
2. What I have done: Built Suse on the Ultra5. It runs fine. Put rarpd on the Ultra5 and put MAC entries in /etc/ethers and IP entries in /etc/hosts for the systems I want to build. I have configured bootp (I think) for the systems I want to build, although I don't think its being used. I have configured an NFS share (/nfs) with three subdirectories, one for each of Suse CD1, 2 and 3. I have copied /boot/vmlinuz into this directory as well. I have set tftp to run, using /tftpboot which is a link to /nfs. Uncompressed and ran elftoaout on vmlinuz. Renamed the file to the file that the systems seem to want to ask for (regardless of the boot command, its always C034A65 or somesuch <shrug>) Connected the Ultra5 and the other system with a rolled ethernet cable. Booted the system I want to build with various command lines: boot net, boot net vmlinux, boot net vmlinux nfsroot=<ultra5 address>:/nfs 3. What I get: The kernel does get loaded and (started) booted on the system I am trying to build, but it panics with the following message before completing: "I have no root and I want to scream". 4. What I need: A clue. I've been googling each issue as it arises (which is why #2 is probably a huge kluge), but I haven't found anything to help me out of this cul-de-sac. Have I missed something terribly important (and probably blindingly obvious), or is what I am trying to accomplish simply not possible? Pointers, suggestions, or references to specific documentation greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
