I believe most people get that.

Backlight off but screen is not. Yep, I have seen it before.

Play with black/whitelists in the radeon driver, make radeon enter D3
or something.

I have not seen "slow" problem before. (Anything interesting in dmesg
after such attempt)? I have seen excessive power consumption on radeon
thinkpads. Patches exists, and were merged, see archives.
