agreed. I also found that limiting the image (even a little) produces
faster writeout and much more consistent writeout times.

I'm still fooling around with my patch that prints benchmarking stats.
Once I started looking at writeout benchmarks I spent so much time
fooling around with different settings that I haven't bothered to do
resume timings yet.
