acpi-based suspend-to-RAM worked fine on debian, if it helps...

This problem appeared on all 2.6.18 kernels I saw, and I heard the
same problem appeared on 2.6.19 kernel. Yet, I didn't try the latest
snapshot.
Currently I am using 2.6.18.2-34-default SMP kernel. And, my bad, I
was too hasty reporting stable behaviour, I continues to appear no
matter whether it was clean boot or after suspending attempts.
