It was deliberate and I'm responsible. For the record, I did that out of pure lazyness. Non-ugly patch to get rid of my lazyness is welcome... As for autoconf... yes, it is slight overkill, but OTOH someone may want to cross-compile this package or something. Yes, it will make further maintenance harder because this will no longer be tiny little package, OTOH I'm afraid it is the way to go.
