Deer Management Forum
Thursday, October 24, 6:30-8:30pm
at Ithaca High School, 1401 N. Cayuga Street, Ithaca NY

The continued high abundance of deer in urban, suburban and rural areas in
Tompkins County is of great concern to many citizens due to Lyme disease, deer
vehicle collisions, ecological, agricultural and ornamental damage. Ecological
assessments suggest that the current local efforts are insufficient in
achieving the desired reductions in deer impacts. In the past individual
landowners and municipalities have struggled individually with deer management.
We are trying to explore the possibilities for a collaborative deer management
approach in Tompkins County. Since the need for and the way to accomplish deer
management is controversial, our deer forum is bringing together local and
regional experts to continue a community discussion. The forum will begin at
6:30PM with poster presentations by various organizations and the main event
from 7-8:30PM will take the form of a moderated discussion with questions
received from the audience.

Panel members:

Jim Sterba (Author of Nature Wars)
Bernd Blossey (Associate Professor; ecologist; Chair Cornell Deer
Management committee)
Paul Curtis (Associate Professor; wildlife management specialist)
