Ithaca Celebrates Earth Day This Sunday
The Ithaca Earth Day celebration will be held on Sunday, April 22, from noon to
5 pm at the Ithaca Farmer's Market pavilion, Steamboat Landing. Mayor Carolyn
Peterson will open the event at noon, and the public is invited to enjoy music,
dance, good food, and to explore more than 40 exhibits about sustainable living
and ways to protect and preserve the planet. Visitors can learn more about
renewable energy, global climate change, our local ecosystem, gardening,
composting, permaculture, recycling and reuse, and local earth-friendly
products.

Exhibitors include Buy Local Foods!, Energy $mart Communities, Engineers for a
Sustainable World, Farm Sanctuary, Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, Level
Green Institute, Master Composters, Significant Elements, and White Hawk
Village. Two new additions this year are an air conditioner collection service,
providing safe disposal of old cooling units; and rides on one of TCAT's new
hybrid-electric buses.

Highlights of the celebration include many activities for children; the second
annual eco-fashion show at 2 p.m.; the traditional Earth Day parade which will
gather at 3:30 p.m.; and the daylong Compost Fair sponsored by Cornell
Cooperative Extension.

Ithaca Earth Day is sponsored by the Center for Environmental Sustainability
(CES). For more information, contact Joey Diana Gates at 351-0664, [EMAIL
