Hi all, Carsharing is great! We've been working on starting one in Ithaca for a while now. Check out www.ithacacarshare.org for more details. Also, www.carsharing.net has links to most of the carsharing organizations across the continent (there are quite a few). There are some amazing success stories there, including PhillyCarShare, which tripled in size in both 2006 AND 2007, with over 35,000 members now.
Unfortunately Ithaca Carshare hasn't been able to launch service yet because of problems getting insurance at a reasonable price. We have gotten help from many quarters, like Bellingham's Community Car Share: support from Cornell, Ithaca College, New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA), the City of Ithaca, and EcoVillage at Ithaca. If only the support of all these organizations could get us auto liability insurance at less than $9000/car/year.
