Syracuse carves out bicycle paths to improve quality of life

Ten years ago, the FOCUS Greater Syracuse community group invited the
public to tell it how to make the region a better place to live. Four
thousand people voted at the group's "visioning" fair at the Onondaga
County Convention Center.
The biggest vote-getter among 87 choices? Bike paths.
"When that was revealed, that bike paths were the top vote-getter,
the community said, 'What, not jobs?'" said Charlotte "Chuckie"
Holstein, executive director of the nonprofit organization.
But people shouldn't have been too surprised, Holstein said. Bike
paths can help bring jobs to a community, she said. "Companies choose
to locate where the quality of life is good because it makes it
easier to recruit employees," she said.
The city listened. Since 2004, it has designated portions of six
roads -- mostly on the city's East Side -- as lanes reserved for
bicyclists.
Holstein praises the city's efforts but says more can be done to make
the community friendlier for bicyclists.

This is a link to a great article about things Syracuse has done (and
will do) to promote biking safety. It talks about how making biking
safer and more convenient brings in jobs and makes it easier to
attract quality workers to your city (among other pluses).
I want Ithaca to put in bike lanes!!
Lots of other GREAT eco articles there too.
