At some point, it seems like threads may be able to move "off list," with a simple notice on-list that a thread on a new topic has started. Can we use a related discussion web site? Ithaca Freecycle has a "café" site, which presumably functions this way (tho I've never been there--the con to having a "sister" list or sit is that I don't want to take the extra step of going to the OTHER freecycle site).
Pro: a related web site: Some of the "thread" discussions we have that are especially practical would be nice to have in an organized (or at least indexed) archive. Another example which includes discussion from readers on practical topics, I like Simon's "Living in Dryden" blog.
