Dear Friends.  Yes....  A vet college grad did a study a few years 
back and determined that there are approximately 6,000 (!) raccoons 
within the City of Ithaca.  I suspect that their numbers have not 
declined since the study was undertaken.  Not only are they terrible 
thieves, they can be severe disease vectors as well.  We have an 
urban possum right here on Court St.  Nasty little bugger.  I had to 
stop leaving out dry food for the outside cat as possums love cat 
food.  And they can kill a cat.  What is needed for both is a 
dog!  Any urban chicken populations would need a skillfully built, 
secure coop and outside run.  This can be done, but it raises the 
cost per egg for quite a while.   Tom
