Hence the code, alert("obj = " + obj), displays the message: obj = null
Any ideas on what might cause this?

I don't know why it doesn't work.
By work, I mean that you should see 12 horizontal bars, mostly blue. Children
appear as indented with relation to the parents. The bars with children, like
the yellow one and all of its children with children, expand/contract when you
click on them.
As I mentioned earlier, I've only tried it in IE using ASVG3 viewer.
