I'm not sure about the particular application you have in mind, but I would differ with your generalization that SVG as a font end GUI to a back-end database "couldn't hack it". Take a look at www.GalacticPathways.com. This application has a 100% SVG front-end with a .NET/C#/SQL Server back-end. It does all the real-time database interaction you're taking about.
