Joseph,
The following suggestion will give you great happiness...

Dump XSLT, use Java(ECMA)Script and its elegant linkages to the DOM. 
You can quickly structure your objects and methods, sometimes a bit 
clunky, but you will speedily move to your goals. Sure, after you have 
created your architecture, go to JAVA/C++/C# or whatever, to solidify 
your objects.
