Yes, I've only seen it rendered in ASV 3, 6 and Opera. But my observation
remains consistent across all implementations I've seen. I suppose it has to
do with how the engine sends events to the browser.

Some head to head comparisons may be viewed at (for example)

http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/cliprotate.svg (SMIL)
vs.
http://marble.sru.edu/~ddailey/svg/embedrotate.html (JavaScript)

http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/feMorphologyDilate.svg (SMIL)
vs.
http://marble.sru.edu/~ddailey/svg/embedmorph.html (JavaScript)

or
http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/stopOpacity.svg( SMIL)
vs.
http://marble.sru.edu/~ddailey/svg/embedmask.html (JavaScript)

All of these use features not yet implemented in Opera, I believe, so
effectively, we're talking only about ASV in IE (in my case running in
Windows (98, 2000 or XP)-- I hear (rumor only) that window.setTimeout is
still slightly broken in IE for Macintosh.

I remember looking at some simpler things in Opera and thinking "alas, it's
true there too", though I can't put my fingers on a proper example. I have
made some smooth SMIL animations that run in IE, provided the animation
doesn't involve complex filters, clips or other fancier stuff.
