Hello, I'm a Geographer inquiring on any information that has to do with simple examples of SVG code for interactive maps produced with SVG. I've seen dozens of map examples, however, I'm trying to understand the code from ground up.
For example, it would be great to see how an interactive map showing countries can have their names highlighted with a mouseover. It would also be good to see how the legend was produced. I think Javascript is involved with that. Has anyone specifically worked with these types of maps? At present, most interactive maps on the Web are produced with Environmental System Research Institutes (ESRI's) Internet Map Service (IMS). Since Spatial Database Engine (SDE) has to be used as a bridge to the web browser & geospatial database, the application takes more time to render map images than SVG. Also, the GUI is as streamlined as SVG (sorry IMS fans). There are other issues of which I will not get into for now. Make no mistake, IMS is definitely an application that gets GIS more into the web environment, however, SVG appears to be a better source for viewing/browsing of geographic data over the web. Once MS IE v7 is released, the use of SVG may increase exponentially. Interactive maps on the web is definitely an untapped market. That's not accounting for MapQuest & Google Earth.
