You are right Marc,

Flash player 1.1.0.0 was installed on this Nokia N70 phone.
Unfortunately, without this software, the message is now “unknown file
format”…

If anybody is able to use SVG T documents on this device, not a prototype
version of it, I would love to know how it is done. I don’t want to do Flash
Lite only (even if Mobile Designer is able to deliver both SVG and Flash ;)

Does it make sense to build a matrix, may be on the svg.org website, to know
which “level” of compliance is available on a given device? For example, the
Sony Ericsson K600i sold by Orange in France is both Flash L and SVG T
compliant. This one works fine locally, over MMS but has some issues over
the UMTS network while browsing…

Unless such a matrix it is too complex to build.

Regards.

Indeed. You are perfectly correct and I would even add to the complexity:
there are four levels of devices with “SVG inside”:

- Devices equipped with an SVG viewer reserved for the personal use
of the device manufacturer. SVG is present, is used for icons and other
stuff but is not accessible for the user.

- Devices with an SVG viewer, but no integration between the viewer
and the browser. This is the most frequent configuration, to my experience

- Devices with an SVG viewer with an HTTP stack

- Devices with a browser “SVG enabled”.

At some point in the future, we will get only level II and IV devices, I
suspect. But for now, it is a problem.

This is kind of a problem, imho.

<rant>
I just picked up a Nokia 9300 communicator believing the PR which said that
it
supports SVG, and was surprised/dismayed to see that whereas it may be able
to show svg somehow on the box, it is certainly not configured to show
web-based svg documents. There may be some obscure trick to get this to
work,
but I gave up after an hour of searching and hunting. Most likely, I need to

download a browser. And here lies the problem again. Just try to find an SVG

browser online for Nokia (model X). For mine, no luck here.

Luckily I can build my own browser or download a java viewer, but as far as
consumer experiences go, this looked to be a total flop to me so far. The
installation ease I expected was simply not there.

There seems to be some confusion about the difference between phones with
(a)
native applications that use SVG files to render their own content and (b)
phones that provide SVG browsing capabilities. In our rush to highlight
*potential compatibility*, we tend to overlook *actual support*.

In my opinion, calling a phone which meets condition (a) above an
SVG-enabled
phone is misleading at best. In fact, the nature of an application's
rendering mechanism is totally irrelevant and does not qualify the device as

an SVG-enabled device.

I would be quite interested in knowing how many mobiles come out of the box
with the ability to browse svg content online.

My sunrise phone certainly did not. It is a symbian 80 device and is
compatible with svg browser apps. But to say the phone is an svg-enabled
phone is totally misleading. It is like saying a phone is quake-enabled (if
you buy the quake software and install it onto your phone, which is
generally
out of reach of most users).

When a phone says it is java enabled, it means it runs java applications.
When
we say a phone is svg enabled, it should be able to render svg content or
svg
files out of the box.
</rant>

Cheers,

Ronan
