what server are you using ? In IIS you can enable content-encoding for
everything served by the server.
see http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/18/ for example.
i'm pretty sure a similar option exists in Apache, but i really don't
know...
but with this option, you don't have to change anything in your application.
if that is however not an option, you can allways use
http://www.gzip.org/ which is Open Source.
