I may have misunderstood.  What I did was find a way to manipulate the
 embedded SVG files from any part of the document.  The trick was that
a script has to be located in the file that initiates the action.  For
example, in order for a function to fire from an event in a SVG has to
have the function in the script tag of that SVG file.  It can't use a
function from another SVG file or the parent HTML.  The examples I
gave show how to get at any part of the document.  Sorry about the mix up.
