"I wish to be able to draw on the canvas freely and create shapes such
as circles, lines and text by the use of a mouseOnclick, mouseDragged
and mouseReleased. "

A very simple thing can be seen here:
http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/rectdraw.svg

For something more complicted, take a look at
http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/Draw018.html It has some bugs here
and there, but some of the basic utility you're talking about works.

Another thing that responds a bit differently to mousedown and mouseover and
drags (but contains some variant of rubber-banding, albeit graph theoretic) is
here: http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/graphs30.svg

Hope this helps,
DD
