I concur. Nice work Chris. I have been giving my students the editable textarea as an exercise for a few years now. It drives them bonkers.
I have found it easier to just rely on HTML for that sort of stuff http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/backandforth20.htm (click and drag and click and click again and edit and connect and so forth) I'll be glad when either editable text objects are native.
