Once again, you can disregard the previous message. Somehow just posting a question here seems to solve my problems.
The gradient coloring started working in IE shortly after I posted that last message. I didn't really change anything, so I don't know what I did to fix it, but it works. Mouse events are still not being triggered in IE (though they work in Firefox and Opera), so maybe by simply mentioning that here, they'll start working for me.
