Thanks for that link - I am sure I will find it useful

In the meantime I have finally found what I needed - the ActiveX control 
from eSVG is exactly what I was looking for.  Although the cost is 
reasonable, I do have a problem with their particular licensing 
approach.  I want to install it on my desktop and on my laptop.  Since I 
never use both at the same time I feel that is reasonable but it would 
be difficult because the licence is tied to an ID unique to the computer 
on which it is installed. YUK !
