The answer seems to be around the "use" element [1].

Although it's conceptually simple, note that it isn't universally
supported yet: although Opera already supports it it for quite a
while, Firefox only recently has fixed the issue [2], so it may be
available soon (Firefox 3.1); I'm not sure about other implementations
(such as Webkit, Batik, etc.). So usage will depend on whether you
target a specific implementation or the Web. ;-)
