Hi, This is really useful and interesting post. However, my experience with running the Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Images <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=21EABB90-958F-4B64-B5F1-73D0A413C8EF&displaylang=en> in Virtualbox has been quite different.
What I have encountered trying to run the IE compatibility VPC images in Virtualbox is that, due to the different emulated hardware between Virtualbox and VPC, the images will fail to activate. See this thread: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21712 This thread is interesting, as the members actually contacted the IE team, and received a positive response: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21712&start=30#p96958 / Hey Guys, Since we started shipping the VPC images in late 2006, we have never officially supported other VM hosting applications other than Microsoft VPC, and Microsoft Legal required us to add that part into the EULA. The reason you're seeing a request for new activation is that the machine sees the "hardware" between Microsoft VPC and VirtualBox and other VPC Hosting apps as different hardware, and thinks you've installed it on another box, thus is requires you to reactivate the Windows. Before we ship the VPC's, we have to mark the activation key as "lost/stolen", so people cannot grab it from the registry and use it to pirate Windows. If there is enough demand, we may be able to get additional images built, I'd ask that you email me at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> along with the VPC software you're running so we can have a better idea of the numbers and needs. thanks, PEte Internet Explorer Developer Product Manager/ But Virtualbox images never ended up getting created, and the activation issue still seems to be the same. But it has been a few months since I last tried it, maybe it has changed. It would be great if it has, as the IE Application Compatibility images are a valuable resource. Holger, did you not experience an issue regarding activation of the image? Let me know.
