Hi Ruth,

I did look at geoname's web services. The problem is that I need to send
them queries. Can I send a query like give me all the points for a
particular country code? If so, then I can look at adapting the xml data to
my application.

Subject: AW: [svg-developers] Create SVG maps from geonames data

Hi Pranav,

<http://www.geonames.org/> http://www.geonames.org/ gives back info as well
as lat/lng values in a JSON format which you can then append to your map
application. I am not sure how you can use existing (SVG) applications and
implement them in your own environment.

I use a lot of their services here:

http://www.mappetizer.de/traveldiary/TravelDiary_Ruth/index.html

e.g. weather (the sun icon in the toolbar), Wikipedia, but also information
about the local language at the specific lat/lng, timezone, findNearBy. It
is fun to use those data.

Betreff: RE: [svg-developers] Create SVG maps from geonames data

Hello Cameron,
<snip Me, too: that is, I'd be a consumer *or* producer (and in
fact already have my own only-runs-in-my-environment demon-
stration) of such an application/utility/product/...
PL] What does your application do? I plan to parse the text dumps of the map
data and then plot them on the map. I will use circles as points. Of course,
if geoNames has a database that I can query and get hierarchical information
that is, get a state from a country and then all the places under that
state, I could produce nicely structured SVG.

Pranav
