Adding fill="freeze" to the animateMotion element fixes the flicker since
the shape that follows the path then stays in place until the event
handler has had a chance to run.

When the animation ends an event is fired, but the script that listens to
that event runs only when it gets that event. Meanwhile the animation has
already ended and in doing that has also removed the animation effect
since fill="remove" is the default.

Cheers
